Shaded in Stone
Winner of ‘Best Shading Application’ demonstrates seamlessly integrated motorized shading that disappears into the architecture

introduction

Situated in the exclusive community of Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, this home is a 10,000-square-foot modern sanctuary defined by craftsmanship and natural materials. The home does not feature a single sheet of drywall and is wrapped entirely in stone, wood, and handcrafted finishes, creating a warm, organic environment rooted in intentional design.

the challenge

The vision was to create a home that feels calming, organic, and deeply connected to its natural materials. The homeowner wanted to create a smart home that felt like a sanctuary, where technology would enhance their lifestyle without being intrusive or compromise the home's minimalist design.

the solution

Quality Audio Video (QAV) was introduced to the project by a construction partner and was able to engage in the design process early on. QAV worked closely with the architect and designers to ensure every detail, from hidden shade pockets to speakers and keypads, was placed to align with the homeowner's vision. Crestron Home® OS was chosen for its reliability and flexibility, allowing for the perfect blend of a smart home and sanctuary.

"The Crestron technology enhances how I live, but it never demands my attention. Everything is so beautiful in the background. It’s exactly what I envisioned."
Homeowner

the technology

The home is a showcase of natural materials and handcrafted elements with no technology in sight. Crestron Home® OS is the backbone of the home, delivering advanced lighting, shading, climate, and audio and video control without compromising any design detail. The Crestron Home OS made it possible for technology to be added to the home without it being overly intrusive in each spaces, eliminating the homeowner's dreaded vision of messy wires throughout the home.

The Crestron Home OS controls lighting, motorized shades and drapes, and in-ceiling speakers as well as offers whole home intercom through Crestron touch screens. The motorized shades and drapes are integrated into concealed ceiling pockets, creating the illusion that makes them disappear when not in use. With the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the home, the motorized shades were important for ease of use and managing the natural daylight. The shades also help control the climate within the home when used in conjunction with the weather.

The homeowners use different scenes set through the Crestron Home system to automate lighting and music throughout the home. Audio is delivered through Crestron DM NAX® Audio-over-IP across the home, and by using the right materials, the speakers are also hidden within the ceiling to maintain the natural appearance of the home. Crestron DM NVX® AV-over-IP is used to enhance the homeowner’s entertainment experience. Multiple displays in the home can play the same content or have music flowing throughout the home when guests are over. Additional features, such as outdoor AV zones and more lighting scenes, were added as the project evolved.

"This home redefines what's possible when technology takes a backseat to design and enhances the experience without needing to be seen. Crestron was the right choice to help bring the homeowner’s vision to life."

the results

Crestron was the right choice due to its power and flexibility in managing a high-performance system without compromising simplicity or design. The home is calm and connected, creating a space where technology fades away, and life takes center stage.
