introduction

Located in Troy, New York, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) has been a first-choice higher education destination in the Capital Region of New York state for more than 60 years. The HVCC campus offers a wide variety of academic spaces, including labs, lecture halls, and smaller traditional classrooms, all of which are designed to improve the learning experience.

the challenge

Previously, HVCC’s IT infrastructure was managed by two different groups; one focusing on computers on the network and the other on instructor console and equipment. Because of the lack of standardization, no two rooms ever featured the same technology. As a result, the IT team received a constant stream of help desk tickets for issues ranging from audio distortion and image clarity issues, to failing projectors. 

the solution

With these challenges in mind, HVCC set out to find an all-encompassing solution that would standardize the user experience for instructors and students across the entire campus, and thus create a more productive learning environment.

the technology

The HVCC IT team enlisted Crestron to centralize support and standardize all academic technologies to provide a consistent look and user experience in all of their academic spaces. Utilizing Crestron .AV Framework™ software, the team was able to design one room standard and then easily replicate it and deploy it in 260 spaces across campus. They were also able to repurpose some of their existing Crestron systems and easily update them, rather than having to start from scratch or perform any additional programming.

With the standardization across campus, the number of calls to the help desk decreased significantly across the board, and the team is able to troubleshoot issues without the need to call second and third-tier level support for assistance. 

A Crestron DigitalMedia™ Presentation System (DMPS) and a Crestron touch screen provide faculty and students with the ultra-high-definition presentation capabilities and room control they need in each of the learning spaces. The Crestron DMPS integrates advanced video, audio, and control signal distribution in one compact device. The simple touch screen interface ensures that the technology in the rooms is a helpful tool, rather than a challenge to be solved. “Crestron’s DMPS and touch screen solutions have helped eliminate lost instruction time in our classrooms, especially in cases that were a result of technology failures,” says Jonathan Brennan, Chief Information Officer, HVCC.

With the success of Crestron technology deployed in the learning spaces, the IT team has had the confidence to deploy other Crestron solutions across campus. The IT team also installed high‑performance Crestron DM NVX® AV-over-IP technology solely within their new manufacturing building, in order to instantly and flexibly route 4K video to displays. And Crestron DM NVX Director™ is used to manage the large network of DM NVX devices within the building.
