The New Crestron Cameo Keypad
Exceptional value, quality, and flexibility
September 4

The next evolution of the Crestron Cameo® keypad is an excellent illustration of a core Crestron philosophy: developing and refining our products by listening to the market, understanding the needs of integrators and homeowners, and responding with a solution that hits the mark on every need. “There was a growing demand for a premium quality keypad and dimmer line at an affordable price,” says John Yohanna, residential VP at Crestron. “And our company is uniquely suited for this: creating a lighting product at this price that doesn’t sacrifice quality, longevity, reliability, or aesthetics.”

The new Cameo keypad represents a significant step forward — its predecessor was a great product, but as technology advances, the devices that control the smart home need updates, too. The new Cameo keypad delivers exceptional performance and great looks, with options ranging from simple rocker switches to fully customizable keypads, 138 potential button layouts, and a wide range of other features that make it perfect for any integration, whether it’s a new build or a retrofit.

People want more control options for their homes,: says Crestron Senior Product Manager of Control and Environmental Solutions, Ben Slivka. “They want something that’s simple but powerful enough to control complex systems like distributed lighting. Homeowners want to add shading control to that interface on the wall, too.”

While the Crestron Horizon® line of keypads and dimmers is an unmatched premium solution, it’s not right for every installation — some customers simply want quality hardware at a lower price.

All of those asks led to the obvious need for the Cameo keypad to evolve. Here’s how we built it.

The Need for a New Keypad

“We knew we needed competitive features,” says Slivka. Those features include RGBW backlit engravings, a lower-cost wired keypad, and buttons that had a more solid feel than their predecessors. “We have a 50-year pedigree in the electronics business,” says Yohanna. “Between that history and our experience with refining the Horizon keypad line, we were able to distill a lot of high-end technology into the final product.”

The “behind the plate” features needed improvement, too, such as better performance with LED loads and expanding the available options for retrofits without a neutral connection. “Now we can offer a universal dimmer with the ability to function without that neutral wire,” says Slivka. The team also recognized a need for ambient light sensors on load controllers so that indicators would never be too bright for a room. “Swapping out a button was also a fussy process with tiny screws — we wanted to fix that, too,” he adds.

“With the previous iteration, there were different aesthetics and feature sets offered between wired keypads and wireless load controllers,” adds Slivka. It was clear that while the original Cameo keypad had filled the bill for many years, the line needed an updates of every facet, from looks to performance. And perhaps most importantly, the Cameo 2 keypad had to provide what homeowners were most interested in: “One ultimate goal was a consistent, more modern aesthetic across the product offering,” says Yohanna. “And the line had to maintain the reliability that Crestron’s famous for — after all, we’re the only lighting control brand that offers a lifetime warranty.”

Homeowner — and Dealer — Feedback was Key

That feedback from users and their Crestron dealers was vital in the development of this new line of keypads. “One of the tricks was getting the buttons just right — they needed to be rounded enough (and protruding enough) for the right ergonomic feel, but flat enough to look better on the wall,: says Slivka. Those buttons, now more solid to the touch, come with a broader range of options, too. “We now have the ability to engrave different size text as well as the ability to engrave indicators into the buttons, and we can make more buttons into side-to-side rockers,” he notes. “We also offer optional indicators in different styles that allow for a modern (bar), clean (dots), or minimalist (no indicators) aesthetic.”

Reducing the profile of the overall keypad — ”making the flush mount even more ‘flush,’” as Slivka puts it — and removing that bezel makes for a cleaner design. A greater number of potential button combinations and the availability of four designer colors add to the choices homeowners now have with the Cameo 2 keypad, and this line’s matching aesthetic between wired, wireless, load controllers, and keypads offers the same consistent look as Crestron Horizon keypads.

“The addition of an ambient light sensor on load controllers ensures those RGBW backlights and indicators are always at the optimal brightness and elevates the whole experience,” says Slivka. “We also went to great lengths to ensure we had a better color match among all the parts of these new keypads.”

Attention to Aesthetics

There’s something in this update for designers and dealers alike: “In addition to the great color match across the parts, the alignment of those parts is superb with this upgrade,” says Slivka. “The backlight quality and features in this line are as good — or even better than anything we offer.” With calibrated backlights that match across devices, they’re capable of tunable white (ranging from dim to warm and circadian lighting). “We’ve separately backlit indicators and bargraphs, and they come in multiple styles,” he adds.

As for the buttons themselves, the Cameo 2 keypad line offers inividually replaceable button types in up to six positions, all with the ability to program side-to-side rockers to allow for any configuration that might be needed. “Those buttons are discretely replaceable, too — even without a tool,” says Slivka, making for more flexibility than ever before. Additionally, the line fits in standard decorator openings, so it can be installed next to other manufacturers’ devices while improving the standard decorator experience. “You don’t always need the extra cost of a bespoke solution like our Horizon keypad products, and this is where the Cameo 2 keypad comes in,” he says.

That flexibility of the design earlier allows dealers to cater to the needs of their customers (and their customers’ designers) for both interacting with the device and matching the aesthetic in their space — and helps dealers inject their own creativity into a project. “There’s quite the attention to detail here, such as separate indicators that make feedback clearer for some users,” says Slivka. “But most importantly, I think, is that all of the devices makes for a consistent user experience everywhere in the home.”

Features Crestron Dealers Will Appreciate

The Cameo 2 keypad is packed with features that make life easier for dealers, too. “We designed this line so that every keypad would be at home in any project, whether it’s new construction or a retrofit,” says Yohanna. The Cameo 2 keypad is available in “no neutral” dimmer versions, perfect for older homes.

The Cameo 2 keypad boasts a standard decorator form factor, and its button are much easier to replace (again, no tools are needed, and there are no small screws to misplace). The line offers field programmable rockers (allowing the installer to convert single buttons to side-to-side rockers) in the bottom four button positions, and with 138-plus button configurations, six button positions, and three different indicator options, it’s perfect for nearly any control application.

As far as performance, the Cameo 2 keypad offers superb dimming functions and universal dimmer options that allow dealers to be confident when it comes to load control. It also offers pass-through wiring terminals on low-voltage keypads and line-voltage devices.

“Internally, this was a tight collaboration between product management, ID, hardware development, mechanical development, and firmware and software development,” notes Slivka. “In addition to those folks Ben mentioned, we convened a dealer advisory council to help us develop this line,” adds Yohanna. “The Cameo 2 keypad, while keeping within the spirit of our original Cameo keypad products, is a significant advancement to the product line.”

“It’s a testament to our commitment to continuous improvement, refinement, and innovation.”
