Crestron Home OS 4.7: A Smarter, Faster Experience for Dealers and Customers

The latest update to our award-winning smart home platform, Crestron Home® OS 4.7, is a terrific representation of the three areas of focus that drive our company. This update features significant steps in the evolution of the core elements of our business: content, collaboration, and control. But there’s another layer to every Crestron Home OS update — namely, improving the complete smart home experience for everyone from dealer to installer to homeowner. “For dealers, this release is all about simplifying installations, expanding integration options, and delivering a more refined experience to your customers,” says Michael Short, Crestron VP of marketing operations and residential.

Control: New Crestron Keypads and Dimmers

Of course, an app isn’t always the best control option for a given room or situation. One of the most notable features in this update is support for Crestron’s new Cameo® keypads, a major update for that line of hardware. The new Cameo keypads and dimmers are packed with features, including RGB functionality with over 16 million color options, up to 137 different layouts with three types of field-replaceable buttons, solid, ergonomic hardware in a bezel-less form factor, and a design that needs no neutral wire for dimmers in retrofit deployments. Horizon® keypads have also been given a stylish upgrade. The all-new metal finishes give clients more design flexibility without compromising functionality. These keypads are also now available in this update — find all the details here.

Content: What Do You Want to Hear?

Music is central to the smart home experience, and Crestron Home OS 4.7 brings several enhancements to whole-home audio. When rooms are grouped and a user turns off the music, the Crestron Home OS touch screen now prompts the user to turn off the entire group or simply that one room. “It’s a great optimization to handle the real-world case where someone wants to stop listening to music in just one room while keeping the music going in the rest of the home,” says Jason Oster, director of product management for software applications at Crestron.

Another update that dealers will find extremely helpful: We’ve added the whole-home music experience to Demo Mode in the iOS® mobile operating system. This makes it easier than ever to showcase the power of the Crestron Home platform’s DM NAX® Audio-over-IP music delivery in showrooms, training sessions, or client meetings.

The Apple Music® streaming service has been supported for the last month through the latest DM NAX® Audio-over-IP firmware, but this update takes that support a step further by allowing users to log in to the service directly via the Crestron Home mobile app. This is a standard implementation like all our other streaming services, requiring no special configuration from dealers.

Furthermore, audio integration continues to evolve with support for uncontrolled AES67 input sources, opening up new possibilities for distributed audio systems.

Collaboration: Working with our Partners for a Better Experience

Meanwhile, Sonos has introduced an authenticated protocol for third-party integrations. While no action is required for Crestron Home OS 4.7 or earlier systems, it’s important to be aware that Sonos may enforce authentication in future updates. To stay current, Crestron has introduced a handy support article to guide dealers through setup for new installations, existing Crestron Home OS systems (both pre- and post-OS 4.7), and SIMPL Windows systems. (Visit the online help article in our knowledge hub here to find out your next steps.)

There’s no urgent action required for Crestron Home OS 4.7 deployment, but we recommend reviewing the Sonos documentation once it’s published to stay ahead of future changes. Again, dealers can use the enhanced demo mode to showcase whole-home music, and be sure to highlight the new integrations and performance improvements to your customers. "We’re staying ahead of the curve with Sonos," said Chase Bouchard, senior product owner of software applications at Crestron. "Dealers won’t need to make changes now, but we’ll ensure you’re ready if and when Sonos enforces authentication."

And that’s not all on the collaboration front: Lighting designers will appreciate the addition of Lutron® Lumaris® fixtures, tape lighting, and linear lighting support, expanding the range of compatible lighting solutions.

"Crestron Home OS 4.7 is about making your job easier and your offering stronger," says Short. "We’re excited to see how dealers use these new tools to deliver even better experiences."
