A look at trends from the annual superyacht show

Crestron at the Monaco Yacht Show

The annual Monaco Yacht Show is a marker — it’s the start of the season that kicks shipyards and specifiers into high gear. “The show traditionally marks the start of a very busy period,” says Daniel Kerkhof, director of Crestron Marine. “The Mediterranean season is over, and that means the refit season has begun — and we start working toward deadlines for new deliveries.” Caribbean season will be underway soon, and the industry is humming with activity as the vessels are readied for their time across the Atlantic.

This year’s show was also abuzz with news regarding one of the world’s most advanced ships. “Just before the show, the biggest brokerage deal in the history of superyachting was closed,” explains Kerkhof. Specifically, that was the sale of the M/Y Breakthrough, a 119-meter vessel that’s the first superyacht powered in part by hydrogen fuel cells. “We were involved with the Breakthrough from a very early stage,” says Kerkhof, “and the chatter around large custom-built superyachts like the Breakthrough illustrates that there’s still huge interest in these ships at the highest end of the luxury market.”

New and Improved Solutions

Crestron's presence this year was all about relationships, meetings, and the latest solutions, says Kerkhof: “The booth had a very clean design that focused specifically on the new solutions that Crestron has introduced, and there was plenty of space for everyone to get hands-on experience with those solutions, like the Crestron Cevo Mini remote and the new Horizon keypad finishes. Development of the remote was driven in large part by dealer feedback, and the new metal keypad finishes fit very nicely into the upscale aesthetic that interior designers demand for their superyacht clients.”

The remote was complemented by another media solution, the introduction of Multiview functionality into the DM NVX® AV-over-IP ecosystem. Multiview allows for the configuration of up to six sources in fixed layouts and the flexibility and scalability of 18 compositions, which makes it perfect for the marine client. “Seeing multiple sports matches at once, or having CCTV camera feeds on the same screen as content are just two examples of how this feature might be used,” says Kerkhof. Another hit at the booth: The DM NAX® Audio-over-IP Edge Devices that can bring nearly any source over an audio network.

Our Partnerships

Kerkhof was especially enthused about Crestron’s partnership with superyachts.com. The online portal for “all things luxury marine” had staged a networking terrace. “We arranged all the AV and control in that space — all run by the Crestron Home OS — and it provided the perfect atmosphere for a glass of rosé and a good conversation,” says Kerkhof.

“Then on Thursday afternoon, we teamed up with our great partners — and neighbors at the show — Bond Technology Management,” he adds. One of the services Bond provides is extensive training in the fields of marine cybersecurity and satellite communications. “We invited all their folks to join us for a drink and a chat on training programs. This was aligned with the official release of the Marine training path in our CTI portal. Now it’s easier than ever for the yachting industry to keep up to speed with the Crestron courses that are relevant to them, and of course, earn certifications for building their professional curriculum.” With these combined training offerings, students can get all the knowledge they need to work on today’s highly advanced superyachts.

Trending Now ...

Beyond the Crestron booth, other industry trends came into sharp focus. “The superyacht sector has become much more eco-conscious over the last few years,” says Kerkhof. “The industry has realized that it has the unique opportunity to drive technological innovation on sustainability.” As is often the case, those innovations will ultimately have a big impact on other industries — the hydrogen fuel cell technology of the Breakthrough is a terrific example. “It’s easy to see how that could be implemented elsewhere,” says Kerkhof. That’s a two-way street, too: “Automation and logic that controls energy use, for example, has long been important in commercial buildings, and that definitely translates to the water.”

“The other big trend is the desire for every vessel to include streaming and on-demand content while at sea,” says Kerkhof. “Thanks to the new satellite internet solutions like Starlink, broadband internet is available everywhere. Owners and guests are changing their way of consuming media, and it mirrors a market Crestron knows very well: high-end residential technology.”

... and in the Future

Kerkhof notes that this show gives Crestron a chance to really illustrate how attuned the company’s been to the evolving marine market. That work continues. “We've spotted a few opportunities for solutions that can make a big difference in this space. So, together with our talents in R&D and product development, we are working on specifying new products that we can talk about during the upcoming Monaco Yacht Shows. And in the short term, keep an eye out for our invitation code for tickets to ISE 2026. I can’t talk about the details yet, but we will be unveiling a couple of new solutions there, which I know our partners in the yachting industry have been waiting for.”

It's a vertical that’s more challenging than some others, as Kerkhof readily admits. “Superyachts are, while they are afloat, a complete ecosystem. Everything one needs must be carried or created onboard. Being on the ocean means you have all the elements and possibly rapidly changing weather conditions, too. All this leads to developing very specific technologies — and with help from our partners, we can make sure we always provide the best possible user experience to the owner and guests.”

“Superyachts really are the pinnacle of technology,” says Kerkhof. “There is so much innovation happening in this market, and so many new technologies are being integrated and combined into custom-designed superyachts, where everything onboard is controlled, monitored, and managed.

“These key elements of the superyacht market line align perfectly with the core values of Crestron — taking a challenging environment and turning it into the best possible experience for the end user.”
