The Crestron Experience Center in Midtown Manhattan
Crestron’s newest immersive space shows off a tremendous range of commercial and residential solutions
October 1

Rich Sasson has been a busy man.

As of this writing, Sasson and his team are in the final days of prepping for the grand opening of the Crestron Experience Center (CEC) in Midtown Manhattan. Sasson — Crestron’s global director of the pro community — has been the point person for shepherding this 5,100-square-foot marvel to completion.

“They say it’s all about location, location, location,” says Sasson, and the street address is a big plus: the New York Design Center (NYDC) in the heart of Manhattan. (200 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY, 10016, third floor, to be precise.) “We are 15 minutes from Penn Station, 15 minutes from Grand Central,” says Sasson. “And that’s at my pace,” he adds with a chuckle.

Crestron has developed a philosophy when it comes to showing off its technology — to go beyond a rack of black boxes and really develop immersive experiences. It’s an approach that informed the last several years of exhibits at trade shows (such as CEDIA® Expo, the InfoComm® trade show, the ISE conference, and so on) and now sees its ultimate expression in this space.

Real-World Experiences

“The Crestron Experience Center is about real-world experiences in a fixed space that has many, many uses,” says Sasson. That’s the difference between the CEC and a trade show booth — or, for that matter, a showroom. “A trade show is a transient walk-through booth, and a showroom is often simply an exhibition space,” says Sasson. “Our goal is for visitors to get hands-on experiences with Crestron, to actually use the technology in the same manner one would at work or at home.”

For example: “There’s BYOD functionality here — you can make a call from Microsoft Teams or Zoom Rooms,” he explains. “You can work in the various spaces we have here — from three to seven in the smaller spaces and up to 50 on the commercial side.” Sitting down and actually putting the technology to the test in the context of an actual workday is simply not possible at a trade show — or in the vast majority of showrooms.

“You can then go relax in the café’ or head to the residential side of the CEC and enjoy a powerful Crestron Home OS and home theater experience,” Sasson adds. “You can really feel the power of an immersive Crestron experience.”

Start with a Huddle Room

“The entire space creates a narrative,” says Sasson. After passing the reception area — complete with a painting of Crestron founder George Feldstein — a visitor can proceed to either the vast array of commercial spaces or experience the residential Crestron Home® OS.

“We’re taking people on a journey,” says Sasson. “We ask, ‘What is it that you are looking to experience in your corporation? What are the needs and challenges you have every day? Have you had difficulty finding usable, easy-to-understand meeting spaces? Well, what about something small like a huddle room?’”

The rooms are named after Broadway shows. “For example, ‘Les Miserable’ has Parisian images playing on the displays in the background.” That imagery is more than just an elegant touch: It’s a demonstration of how, in a moment, digital signage or other content can be transformed into a display ready for BYOD video conferencing technology. “You can come in and use our AirMedia technology right away, get connected to your platform of choice, and adjust lighting, climate, everything.” A slightly larger space, dubbed “Hamilton,” offers the magic of a 1 Beyond camera, connection for a visitor’s laptop into the DM NVX® AV-over-IP system, mics, and Crestron’s new PoE speakers. “We also added motorized drapery for privacy and sound absorption,” says Sasson.

The Crestron Sightline Experience — and Beyond

“Just outside of that huddle space is an open office environment where our sales team or customers can come in, access the desk meeting panel, and book a space with a QR code,” says Sasson. “They can plug in via USB-C or HDMI. There are cameras and connectivity in each of those spaces for instantaneous video conferencing. Digital signage gives scheduling and availability info.”

From there, a visitor can step into a demo space that’s complete with the Crestron Sightline Experience, an intelligent video solution that leverages the Automate VX multi-camera speaker tracking solution, creating an automated, broadcast-quality video conferencing experience for remote meeting attendees. “Between the four displays and five 1 Beyond cameras, everyone can see and be seen,” says Sasson. “And careful mic and speaker placement ensures that collaborators can hear and be heard as well.”

“There’s also a multipurpose room with two LG MAGNIT 4K 136” micro-LED displays to give visitors a feel for what can be done in those large-scale, high-impact, high-value spaces,” says Sasson. “It showcases the best of what can be accomplished for both in-person and remote meeting attendees.” The rooms feature everything from complete camera, mic, and speaker arrangements in one to the Crestron Videobar 70 all-in-one collaboration bar in another — and enough flexibility so that a dealer can see just how many solutions from Crestron’s partners fit into the mix. “When people see the options they can command with one touch — or even ‘no touch’ — automation, I think they’ll be quite surprised,” adds Sasson.

The Residential Side

The Crestron Home OS — and all the devices that the platform runs — is another part of the immersive experience. “There's a lovely door with a Crestron Yale lock integration,” says Sasson. “We have lighting control for the interior and exterior. When you approach the Crestron touch screen, a welcome program comes up, the lights come on, the TV turns on, music is playing softly in the background. Depending on the time of day, I can adjust that playlist so that it's a little bit more upbeat earlier in the morning, a little bit more subtle in the afternoon, and as we get close to the evening, some soft jazz takes over. And since we are using color-tunable lighting, I can change the colors of the space and set circadian rhythms as well.” From kitchen to living room to bedroom and home office, every aspect of a residential integration is represented.

One huge benefit of the CEC — in both the commercial and residential areas — is that visitors are encouraged to feel the tech. “We want people to have that tactile experience,” says Sasson. “Whether it’s a Horizon keypad or a Crestron Flex device, we want clients, dealers — everyone — to feel that fit and finish and understand the quality of these solutions.”

Sasson is quick to note the help he’s had from his teammates. “Our Lead Technical Solutions Director Jonathan Garcia has been an absolute rockstar helping us turn this vision into reality,” says Sasson. “And our Customer Experience Coordinator, Davilyn Vasquez, is learning all about these solutions at an incredible pace.”

Sasson stresses that the CEC is a true multi-use facility. “It’s a workplace, it’s an event space, it’s an experience center,” he says. “And it’s a true public space: Anyone can come in at any time and have a look around.” Sasson further notes that Crestron’s neighbors in the building have been tremendously supportive: “It’s a testament to the impact technology’s made — designers, architects, everyone understands how these solutions enhance and improve the spaces where we live and work.”

It's also a testament to the manner in which Crestron solutions, partner products, and a holistic approach to the design-build aspect of a project work in concert. Sasson sums it up: “Ultimately, it's about creating a phenomenal experience for our customers.”
