Refreshing the Crestron Horizontal Sheer Shades Collection

Every residential lighting integration actually starts outside the home: The best lighting designs, first and foremost, incorporate natural light. Le Corbusier, one of the fathers of modern buildings, was quoted as saying, "The history of architecture is also the history of windows.” Controlling that natural light and balancing privacy with a home’s natural views is the realm of shading.

It's something Crestron’s been carefully attuned to, adapting our lines as tastes change. As of today, there’s another step in that process: Crestron’s Horizontal Sheer Shades now feature three new fabric collections — Telluride, Vail, and Keystone — each offering elevated textures, sophisticated color palettes, and a new three-inch vane for improved light control and view-through.

As Crestron VP of Residential and Marketing, Michael Short notes, “This refresh marks a pivotal moment for Crestron shading — it’s not just a product update, it’s the beginning of a broader evolution. With three new fabric collections and a redesigned sample book, we’re elevating both the aesthetic and functional value of our Horizontal Sheers. It signals our commitment to design-forward innovation and sets the stage for future shading enhancements.”

“The refreshed Horizontal Sheer Shades collection was inspired by two guiding principles: enhancing the design experience for dealers and design professionals, and transforming the way light interacts within our clients’ homes,” says Leah Martinez, product manager of control and environmental solutions at Crestron.

“From a design perspective, we looked at how this product has been received since its original launch in 2018. While its functionality was already elegant, it hadn’t evolved to reflect the shifting aesthetics of luxury interiors. Our goal was to enhance both form and function.”

So where did the inspiration for the enhancement come from? “Ultimately, our inspiration came from the unique ability of Horizontal Sheer Shades to layer light,” says Martinez. “By combining a sheer with a vane, the collection offers UV protection, privacy, and a transformative light experience that elevates any room from ordinary to unforgettable.”

The Fabrics

“Every element, from neutral hues to refined fabric textures, was chosen to harmonize with today’s most sophisticated spaces,” she adds. “Each of our new fabric collections was thoughtfully selected to reflect the evolving trends in today’s interiors, where comfort, sophistication, and subtle luxury are key.”

Martinez explains the attributes of each offering:

  • Telluride — “This fabric line draws inspiration from rustic retreats, featuring deep indigo, warm brown, and a rich gray tone that evokes a sense of grounded comfort.”
  • Vail — “Here we’ve introduced a sophisticated linear texture, embodying refined living with a versatile palette of warm beige, elegant grays, deep brown, and classic black. It blends timeless charm with modern sophistication, aligning with the trends toward layered neutrals and elevated textures.”
  • Keystone — “This offering celebrates subtlety with a tranquil mix of crisp white, soft linen, mocha, and cool gray. Its serene aesthetic supports the growing desire for interiors that feel restorative and enduring.”

The new fabrics were driven by evolving tastes, says Martinez: “Designers and homeowners alike are embracing layered textures and soft color stories to create spaces that feel both inviting and elevated. Together, these fabrics reflect a broader movement in interior design for 2025 and beyond — a return to warmth, comfort, and grounding neutrals.”

The Vanes

In addition to the three new fabric lines, the new three-inch vane size was introduced to increase view-through. “A larger vane gives a homeowner a more expansive connection to the outdoors while still softening and diffusing light,” says Martinez. “Many Crestron customers have invested in homes with striking landscapes or cityscapes, and we wanted to enhance how those views are experienced.”

The larger vane does just that, creating a more expansive connection to the outdoors while still maintaining privacy. There are other benefits, says Martinez: “From a performance standpoint, the sheers gently diffuse natural light, helping to protect fine art, flooring, and furnishings from UV damage.

“Aesthetically, the three-inch vane adds a sense of scale and luxury to the window, making the shade feel more luxurious and intentional. It allows us to deliver a design-forward solution that meets the high expectations of today’s clients — balancing beauty, functionality, and protection in one elegant product.”

All of this adds up to more options in an already impressive shading line. “Horizontal Sheer Shades complement our roller shades, drapery solutions, and Roman shade offerings — adding a distinctive way to transform light with visual depth and layered UV protection,” says Martinez.

The Sample Book

There’s an updated sample book in the mix, too. “The fabrics offer layered textures and sophisticated palettes, while the sample book provides a future-ready platform for ongoing innovation,” says Short. The book includes lifestyle and technical photography to show the shades in real-world settings, larger removable fabric swatches that can be placed directly in a window, and operational fabric swatches that demonstrate how vane actuation and layered sheers transform light. “With those removable swatches, clients can see how natural light transforms the fabric and colors, depending on the directional orientation of a window,” adds Martinez.

The large-format swatches demonstrate opacity options, helping users compare translucent and light-dimming fabrics. “These details not only make it easier for dealers and designers to tell the product’s story, but also help homeowners see, touch, and trust the quality they’re investing in,” says Martinez. Every detail of the book was carefully considered. “The cover was deliberately chosen in a soft, luxurious blue with a subtle metallic finish that reflects the light and airy qualities of the shades,” she says. “A debossed logo adds a tactile detail that helps the book stand out on the shelf. From the moment it’s in hand, it signals that this is a collection worth exploring.”

“The sample book was designed to tell the broader Crestron story,” says Short. “It introduces who we are, what we do, and why we are the trusted partner for luxury homes. From beautifully designed keypads to the sophistication of Crestron Home control, we support every step of the journey, from the initial design vision to the final finishing touches. Our goal is to deliver a truly cohesive luxury experience.”

Use Cases

Horizontal Sheer Shades are most often specified in residential spaces, where clients want to soften daylight, preserve beautiful views, and add a layer of luxury to their interiors. “They're ideal for rooms where both natural light and privacy are important — such as living rooms, kitchens, home offices, and bedrooms — offering light dimming properties and privacy without the need for full blackout,” explains Martinez.

“Beyond residential, the collection lends itself to high-end boutique environments where fire-retardant requirements may not apply,” she adds. “Think private art galleries, luxury retail spaces, or intimate hospitality venues where ambiance and aesthetics take priority. In these settings, Horizontal Sheer Shades help create a serene, elevated atmosphere that feels both modern and timeless.”

“Ultimately, this collection is designed for spaces that prioritize beauty, performance, and the subtle art of transforming light — whether that’s a luxury residence, a curated commercial space, or a bespoke hospitality project.”

“This launch reflects a shift toward more curated, design-led experiences,” says Short. “We’re moving beyond technical performance to embrace storytelling, texture, and visual impact.” The entire package — sample book included — is designed to help dealers and design-build professionals realize the Crestron commitment to constant improvement, says Short. “They can expect continued innovation — both in product and presentation. This refresh is just the beginning. We’re committed to expanding our shading portfolio with more design-forward options, enhanced tools, and resources that make it easier to sell, specify, and install Crestron shades in high-end projects.

“This update doesn’t just revitalize a single product — it expands the ways Crestron delivers performance, beauty, and choice across every space.”

And ultimately, it’s yet another aspect of the larger mission, according to Short: “It’s about creating smart homes that are not only functional but beautifully curated.”
