Introducing AutoMeasure: The Key Feature of the Automate VX 6.5 Update

When it was first introduced, Crestron’s Automate VX multi-camera speaker tracking solution represented a significant advancement in video conferencing. It’s a spatially aware, intelligent video system that delivers immersive, fully automated multi-camera experiences.

As we explained on the Crestron blog:

The Automate VX solution is an excellent choice for large, high-impact spaces like executive boardrooms, high-impact lecture halls, and bigger spaces where you need automated speaker tracking, dynamic layouts, and a polished, professional video experience. It’s ideal for environments that demand hands-free, high-production quality output.

The Automate VX system directs, composites, and switches up to 12 cameras based on a spatially aware room design using information from the microphones in the room. The cameras are linked to a single video conferencing appliance. This provides the user with industry-leading multi-camera speaker tracking: Visual AI functions for presenter framing and tracking which enable precisely framed shots, reframing if a person moves while speaking, and switching cameras if they change the direction they are looking, so that a remote viewer also gets a head-on view of the speaker.

Simply put, the Automate VX solution utilizes the spatial relationship between microphones and cameras to dynamically track speakers and frame shots. That spatial awareness is what sets Automate VX apart from traditional camera switching systems.

AutoMeasure: AI That Reads the Room

And now the system’s even better: The latest firmware update to the solution — Automate VX 6.5 — brings with it a feature called AutoMeasure, an enhancement to the Intelligent Video Room Designer that ensures spatial awareness from day one. AutoMeasure is an AI-powered configuration feature in the system’s Intelligent Video Room Designer, making the deployment of Automate VX systems faster, easier, and more accurate than ever.

Because the Automate VX solution coordinates multiple cameras based on precise audio input and spatial positioning, even minor deviations in device placement can impact framing accuracy and speaker tracking. For optimal results, accurate measurements and proper calibration are essential.

AutoMeasure can automatically achieve those measurements and calibrations, utilizing computer vision and ArUco markers to detect the precise position and orientation of cameras and microphones. The result: A calibrated system that delivers consistent, high-quality video performance without the need for manual measurement.

“AutoMeasure helps solve a common problem,” says Cara Shannon, a senior manager of product marketing at Crestron. “The design ‘on paper’ doesn’t always account for certain elements of a room — or changes that may need to occur during the installation and deployment process as a project comes together.”

How It Works

In real-world Automate VX system installations, device placement often deviates from the original room design due to ceiling obstructions, construction tolerances, or field adjustments made to accommodate unique site conditions. These subtle differences can significantly impact shot framing, as the Automate VX solution depends on precise spatial relationships to guide camera movements.

AutoMeasure solves this by automatically calculating the actual positions of installed cameras and microphones and updating the room design accordingly. This eliminates the need for manual measurements, streamlines setup, and reduces the risk of configuration errors.

AutoMeasure utilizes purpose-built AutoMeasure Cubes equipped with ArUco markers, which are temporarily placed on the ceiling microphones to measure the position and orientation of the cameras relative to the mics. AutoMeasure calculates X, Y, Z coordinates and angles, delivering a spatially aware approach that automatically yields accuracy and flexibility.

As part of Crestron’s ongoing efforts to find more sustainable solutions, the feature uses reusable AutoMeasure Kits. These tools enable scalable deployment while minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency across multiple installations.

As hybrid work and intelligent video become central to modern collaboration, organizations need smarter tools to simplify deployment and ensure consistent performance — especially at scale. AutoMeasure addresses this need by introducing automation and AI to AV configuration, allowing integrators to deliver high-quality experiences with greater accuracy and reduced manual effort.

“We’ve been focused on making spaces smarter,” says Shannon. “That begins with a  smarter setup process.”

“Spatial awareness is at the foundation of the intelligent video capabilities of the Aurtomate VX solution — and AutoMeasure enhances that with AI-powered precision and automation.”
