DM NVX AV-over-IP Technology — Now with Multiview

Late last year, Crestron rolled out the new DM NVX® 384 encoder/decoder — and this addition to our line of DM NVX® AV-over-IP technology solutions proved to be extremely popular. This encoder/decoder comes packed with features, including HDMI® and USB-C® connectivity, 4x1 input switching, support for 5K resolution displays, enterprise-grade security, and Pixel Perfect Processing technology, which provides flawless video transport in all applications at incredibly low latency.

As we announced at this year’s InfoComm® trade show, we’ve now added Multiview functionality to that device, which allows you to distribute content from multiple sources and view each image on a single display in a variety of fixed compositions.

“There was a court in California that specifically asked for this feature,” says Kevin Dry, group product manager of AV solutions at Crestron. “From that prototype, we developed the DM NVX Multiview solution for broad release, since it’s great for a wide variety of verticals.”

Having every content feed packaged in a single device simplifies the system while reducing failure points without adding any latency.

Use Cases and More

In addition to courtrooms, the use cases for a DM NVX system with Multiview include all manner of applications. The most obvious is likely a sports bar — having multiple games on a large-format display with all that content being delivered as simply and efficiently as DM NVX AV-over-IP can make it is a huge benefit. That means it’ll also be a hit with sports fans who want a similar experience in their at-home media rooms — imagine the possibilities during an annual collegiate hoops tournament, for example.

The low latency of the DM NVX AV-over-IP system with Multiview also makes it ideal for the shift from sports bars to sportsbooks. Command and control centers can benefit greatly from Multiview, too, as can large lecture halls with educational applications — think of a panel discussion with remote speakers and a PowerPoint® software presentation for the audience. Really, any deployment with a large-format display that demands multiple content streams will find this advancement very beneficial.

Sources and Layouts

Multiview allows the configuration of up to six sources in fixed layouts and the flexibility and scalability of 18 compositions. The DM NVX 384 decoder dynamically composes these sources into the preset layouts, which can be instantly recalled to suit the application’s needs.

Having every content feed packaged in a single device simplifies the system while reducing failure points without adding any latency. The solution allows for easy, intuitive audio control and routing and offers custom text overlays and borders for content identification. While Multiview is a feature specific to the DM NVX 384, the primary stream can be decoded by any DM NVX 4K AV-over-IP receiver.

There’s another plus, says Dry: “The majority of switches and systems out there are a one-gig network, and that’s all you need for the DM NVX 384 Multiview. You don't have to buy new products and switches to get this to work. You can use your existing DM NVX AV-over-IP infrastructure.”

The Scalability of DM NVX AV-over-IP is another plus.

Colors, Transitions, Borders — and Audio

It’s also a snap to change the look of your layout. “You can change the text color, you can change the background transparency, and you can change the background color,” says Dry. “The text overlay feature is very cool. You also have a border that you can call up, so you have the ability to circle one of the windows with a color of your choice as well, and you can change that color, too,” he adds. To change the stream in a window in your layout, you’re not restricted to just a “jump cut,” either: fades, zooms, wipes are just some of the available transitions.

“As for sound, you can call up the audio on any image that's on the screen,” says Dry. (You can also direct the audio to “follow” a border that’s moved from one image to another.) “We also pass multichannel audio — 5.1 surround sound — which is pretty unique to our system,” he adds. “And we found a way to do that all still over that gigabit pipeline.” And, of course, the scalability of DM NVX AV-over-IP is another plus. “You can add as many encoders and decoders as your network can support," adds Dry.

Content, Collaboration, and Control

The introduction of Multiview is a refinement to one of Crestron’s core pillars — the three areas we focus on when we bring new solutions to market. DM NVX AV-over-IP is an advancement of our “content” pillar: Solutions that enable sharing content with a room of people or an organization, easily, intuitively, and with high quality and low latency.

The other pillars are collaboration and control. Collaboration is all about engaging with people, in person or remotely, using technology to create the most natural experience for more successful collaboration. Crestron control solutions are built to bring you simple user experiences that match the workflow of any space. It’s our belief that automated functions should simply work for anyone, simplifying technically complex spaces for any level of users and connecting the infrastructure for easy management and monitoring.
