Smarter Intelligent Video: The Automate VX 6.5 Speaker Tracking Solution

The Automate VX speaker tracking solution, introduced in 2017, set a new standard in videoconferencing tech as an intelligent, spatially aware video system that tracked voices in a room using audio location data. Updates, both large and small, have been introduced to the system since then, including last year’s addition of Visual AI features for auto-framing and reframing that extended the power of the Automate VX solution's speaker tracking capabilities. (The system gained the ability to auto-frame a speaker, centering them in the frame even if they move from a position where a microphone had been sending location data.)

Each step forward in the evolution of the Automate VX solution is an expression of something that’s been driving innovation at Crestron as hybrid working and learning have become the norm. It’s what we refer to as “engineering a culture of collaboration,” a concept we discussed at length during a recent keynote event. In the runup to that presentation, Crestron’s EVP of Global Marketing Brad Hintze summed up the philosophy: “Collaboration isn’t an afterthought. It’s engineered into every Crestron product. And when collaboration works effortlessly in every space, it becomes cultural.”

It's about ensuring that collaboration just works — that the technology nearly fades into the background, and that every user has a completely frictionless experience with both hardware and software. It’s a guiding principle behind this latest improvement to our industry-leading intelligent video system: The Automate VX 6.5 solution update is a powerful firmware update that simplifies deployments and offers greater device support.

The Automate VX 6.5 Firmware Update: The Details

There are several impactful elements to this update, and the biggest is AutoMeasure, a tool in the system’s Intelligent Video Room Designer that automates measurement and calibration to speed up deployment. While this feature demands its own dedicated blog post (coming soon/which you can find here), it’s hardly the only highlight of the Automate VX 6.5 solution. This update also includes performance improvements to its Visual AI (which will deliver a more accurate, faster, and more reliable experience), expanded device support (including mics from several manufacturers and Panasonic broadcast cameras), integration with the Crestron XiO Cloud® technology operations management platform, a Health Status API, and a number of enhanced Intelligent Video Room Designer tools.

AutoMeasure

This major update includes AutoMeasure, a feature that utilizes computer vision and ArUco markers to detect the position and orientation of cameras and microphones. The result: a calibrated system that delivers consistent, high-quality video performance without requiring manual measurements. AutoMeasure utilizes ArUco markers to automatically align the Automate VX Intelligent Video Room Design feature with real-world device placement, thereby eliminating manual measurements, enhancing spatial accuracy, and reducing setup time.

Expanded Microphone Support

This update also includes compatibility with a wider array of microphones, including those from Shure, Bosch, and AudioTechnica. Each of these manufacturers creates mics designed for videoconferencing applications, and expanding the range of supported devices means that the Automate VX solution will work seamlessly in a broader variety of rooms, including those with unique ceiling designs or architectural constraints.

Expanded Camera Support

The 6.5 update also supports Panasonic broadcast cameras, enabling the system to expand both its videoconferencing and live production capabilities. This means the Automate VX system can be used in those flexible spaces that handle everything from conferences and meetings to produced events. With this update, the Automate VX solution offers more choices, more custom solutions, and more ways to meet client and organizational needs with a single platform.

Smarter Monitoring: XiO Cloud and Health Status API

This update also enables integration with Crestron XiO Cloud technology, an operations management platform that allows you to deploy, monitor, and manage all your Crestron devices from one dashboard. Additionally, it introduces a new Health Status API, providing real-time system visibility for proactive diagnostics and maintenance. This update offers significant benefits for IT teams, including real-time data on the health of systems and devices, proactive maintenance, and reduced downtime. More reliable systems and fewer calls to the help desk make for happier IT teams and end users alike.

Enhance Intelligent Video Room Designer Tools

AutoMeasure isn’t the only improvement to the Intelligent Video Room Designer in this update: the Room Designer includes new keyboard shortcuts and a multi-device selection feature. These tools help speed up room configuration and make complex layouts easier to manage.

Upgrading to the Automate VX 6.5 solution to receive these features is free. It’s an incredibly cost-effective way to leverage new features without requiring additional hardware. Your existing Automate VX system will be more powerful than ever without adding or replacing a single “black box” — and that’s good for the environment as well as your bottom line.

The Automate VX 6.5 solution delivers smarter setup, broader compatibility, and better system management — it’s a future-ready solution that evolves with your needs. By simplifying installation for integrators, reducing downtime and support calls to the IT department, and providing presenters, educators, and collaborators with the best possible experience we can offer, Crestron has made intelligent video smarter than ever.
