Outdoor Living Options with Crestron

The National Association of Home Builders published a terrific blog post in late 2024 — it’s a sponsored piece, but it’s an eye-opening aggregation of stats regarding outdoor residential spaces. Among the numbers:

  • Demand for outdoor living areas has grown by 50% over the last five years,
  • With that comes a 40% increase in outdoor entertainment areas,
  • And 64% of current owners have aspirations of adding multi-functional outdoor spaces to their homes.

There’s been a distinct desire to create seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor living, and it’s led everyone from builders to technology integrators to think of outdoor patio or pool spaces as their own “rooms.” And that has homeowners asking: What could enhance that room? Perfect lighting? Outdoor audio that’s hidden in the gardens? Fire features?

We dug into this on the Crestron blog back in January with John Galante, president and founder of AE Ventures, and publisher of BuilderInnovator.com:

Outdoor spaces — for cooking, for entertaining, for relaxing, for watching a movie — have evolved as “bonus rooms” over the past several years. “The really interesting thing for the technology industry is I think the builders get that tech is integral to creating interesting experiences outside,” says Galante. The problem is that many builders don’t know what may be available, from weather-resistant TVs to subwoofers that can be partially buried in the ground. “These players are pretty new,” he says. “With the national and regional builders, the tech industry needs to figure out how to work with them on their model homes and figure out what the asset base is to help them in the digital design center or physical design center to sell these things.”

“Design-build pros can expect the same exceptional quality in outdoor integrations that Crestron brings to indoor residential spaces,” says Giles Sutton, Crestron's director of business development. “With the right planning, pool and patio spaces can be absolutely stunning technological marvels.”

Audio Solutions

One of the most popular tech integrations for outdoor spaces is distributed audio. As we noted on our blog earlier this year:

“Here in sunny San Diego, California, I’d say roughly 95% of our home integrations have some kind of outdoor audio component,” says Ryan Lipkovicius, CEO of the firm Audio Impact. Lipkovicius notes that his clients’ approach to these spaces has changed: “It’s more than just a zone. The installation of audio by the pool, the patio, and the outdoor grill often becomes an individual, focused project of its own.”

Some of the challenges of outdoor audio in residential integrations are pretty obvious. First among them is climate: You’ll need speakers and cabling that can handle blazing, direct sun, bitter cold, and everything in between. Other issues aren’t quite as visible. Outdoor spaces are “rooms without walls,” zones that don’t have the same finite footprints as their indoor counterparts. Sound can dissipate quickly when it’s broadcast outside — just ask any engineer in the pro audio realm who’s had to mix a live music festival. Speaker placement and proper signal processing are vital to an installation’s success.

Climate-resistant tech that can deliver great audio anywhere is built into Crestron DM NAX® Audio-over-IP solutions. Crestron DM NAX Audio-over-IP was designed to meet the stringent demands of marine installations, and those requirements more than match the needs of every other application for the DM NAX technology. “Marine deployments can be among the most demanding, and they require devices that feature maximum toughness and durability,” says Sutton. “And Crestron makes amps with access to everyone’s favorite streaming services built right in.”

Outdoor Spaces Powered by Crestron: See the Case Study

A Crestron award-winning home with a system created by Pacific Audio and Communication that’s nestled into the hills on the Hawaiian island of Maui features an infinity-edged elevated pool that feeds into a lower level, a Jacuzzi® whirlpool spa, a grotto with a waterslide, and a waterfall in the courtyard of the estate. Every single water feature is served by distributed audio and video.

Video (and Power)

While it’s not quite as ubiquitous as audio, more homeowners are enjoying the benefits of outdoor displays for game days and movie nights. As with audio, by deploying AV-over-IP technology throughout a home for a distributed video solution, the outdoor display becomes another endpoint — that means that the source for streaming, games, or DVD content doesn’t have to “live” outside, it can exist in an indoor rack with other gear. Outdoor display technology has evolved to the point where devices are weather-resistant and can deliver a great image even in direct sunlight.

Crestron DM NVX® AV-over-IP technology can deliver brilliant, 4K (and beyond) images with no lag or signal loss to any endpoint the homeowner chooses. “It’s a scalable solution, so if the cable’s there, the signal can reach the TV,” says Sutton.

Video, of course, can be a two-way street: For many homeowners, outdoor surveillance is a must, and powering all that equipment requires planning in the design stage. We’ve touched on this on our blog:

Stronger outdoor Wi-Fi® wireless technology solutions and more exterior cameras are also in demand — along with energy solutions for audio and other devices. “We’re seeing requests for greater numbers of dedicated circuits and power conditioning units for these amps to thrive,” notes Ryan Lipkovicius. “The budgets for these spaces have definitely increased. They’re a priority now — clients want to devote significant resources to these spaces as they gain more and more attention.”

Lighting and Control

The Crestron Home® OS can control outdoor lighting just as easily as its indoor counterparts. Getting control from point A to point B — from, say, the homeowner’s smartphone to an all-weather luminaire — is easy, even in the trickiest situations. Crestron Zūm® Wireless lighting is a terrific example of a solution that’s ready for getting lighting control wherever a designer might need it: It’s a scalable system that connects devices over a secure network. The system can handle literally thousands of devices all connecting back to a central location, or run them as standalone zones, room by room — or patio and pool. Crestron integrates with a wide range of lighting solutions, including accent lighting, ambient mood lighting, lighting for water features, walkway illumination, security and emergency lighting, and more. It’s all programmable and easily automated. “You can even sync lights to music with the right programmer handling the integration,” notes Sutton.

If you’re deploying a Crestron control system indoors, it’s a simple matter to add that control to outdoor spaces. “Because it’s all part of the Crestron ecosystem, the user interface will remain consistent across every space, indoors and out,” says Sutton. A terrific illustration of all of this can be found in the Crestron case study mentioned above, the Jones Residence in Hawaii:

Utilizing the full sandbox of programming options from Crestron, a variety of subsystems, including lighting, shading, climate control, security, audio, and pool control, were easily integrated into a unified Crestron touch screen interface. This enables the homeowners to tackle several actions, including customizing their lighting preferences or being notified of security issues. Additionally, the system offers remote monitoring and automatic network optimization.

Outdoor entertaining isn’t just a tropical phenomenon, however — demand for pool and patio spaces has been growing everywhere. After all, those who live in “four seasons” regions want to take full advantage of those zones whenever possible, and outdoor heating solutions can stretch that window. “Mix in some of the other tech solutions — everything from fire suppression to automated awnings — and outdoor living can be as safe and comfortable as any indoor living room,” says Sutton.

Entertainment Everywhere

Video technology continues to rapidly evolve. The introduction of every new streaming service makes it increasingly complicated and frustrating to simply watch TV or play a video game. DM NVX technology unifies all your sources, from cable boxes and game consoles to video security systems and Apple TV® digital media extenders, so they're all easily accessible and controllable.

Residential Lighting

Your body runs on a 24-hour cycle called a circadian rhythm. Lighting affects one major aspect of it: your sleep-wake cycle. Replicating natural light provided by the cycles of the sun with artificial light can improve your mood, concentration, creativity, and energy levels, as well as promote better sleep. This can be accomplished using tunable LED light fixtures and technology such as the Crestron SolarSync® photosensor.
