Finding the Perfect Marine Keypad with Crestron

Daniel Kerkhof knows his specifiers.

Crestron’s Director of Marine, Kerkhof often has to please a very discerning set of eyes when he’s suggesting keypad options for a yacht: the interior designer.

“When you’re building or refitting a luxury vessel, it’s the designer who really understands what the client will be most pleased with,” he says. While Kerkhof and the integrators on a marine project are certain they can meet the client’s wishes with a “backbone” based on the Crestron Home® OS or a custom solution, those high-end details are the realm of a different expert. And those experts demand options.

“A designer who’s working with Crestron should feel confident that we’ll be able to fulfill their wishes in one of four ways,’ says Kerkhof. “First, you have solutions manufactured by Crestron, the Horizon and Cameo lines. Two, our own keypads with a different faceplate.” Those devices literally have the “guts” of a Crestron keypad — all the electronics — with a different aesthetic layered on top.

“Number three, we have keypads from our keypad partners: The guys that actually built their own keypad, but have a Crestron chip in it,” he adds. “And four, if there's no other option, we can always also use a C2N-UNI8IO Universal Keypad Interface to transform a third-party keypad into a Cresnet device and connect it to the system.”

Crestron Keypads

Crestron Horizon®

Crestron Horizon® keypads got an update just a few years ago, refining their tactile response, elevating their already sophisticated contemporary design, and adding advanced functionality. The Horizon line’s superior alignment and button feel consistency deliver a truly pleasing user experience. “The metal finishes are the most popular, and they’re built to withstand the conditions at sea,” says Kerkhof.

The keypads feature finishes that are the combined result of conversations with hundreds of designers and architects. Available in a variety of colors, materials, and sophisticated finishes to complement the most luxurious and contemporary interiors, these keypads and dimmers also include tunable color backlighting that illuminates the engraved text on the buttons for enhanced readability under any lighting conditions. Horizon keypads offer personalized, high-quality button engraving options, including icons and foreign characters.

Crestron Cameo®

Crestron Cameo® keypads saw a very recent addition to the line, the Cameo® flush-mount keypad. As we mentioned on the Crestron blog:

“It’s designed to practically disappear into the wall, creating a seamless, architectural finish.

“Designers consistently tell us that they prefer the ultra-low-profile aesthetic as it is a lot more subtle than traditional keypads,” says Giles Sutton, director of business development at Crestron. “This allows the focus of a space to remain on the architecture and interior elements rather than draw attention to the controls. It delivers a cleaner look that aligns with contemporary design styles.” Sutton notes there are many attractive features in the flush-mount keypad, such as adaptable mounting options, a smaller footprint, and an ultra-low profile. “All of this complements a designer’s vision rather than competing with it.”

A Different Faceplate

An excellent example of a collaborative device is the Crestron partnership with Luhkee, as detailed on the Crestron blog:

Luhkee (stylized as “[ luhk-ee ]”) is a Belgian firm that’s a true family business. Brothers Staf and Toon Van Lierde and their father Jan are creating lines of hardware for home, marine, and hospitality that include faceplates, receptacles, and more — all informed by a unique and elegant aesthetic derived from Jan’s decades of experience in the field of architecture.

A variety of styles and configurations fit directly over the electronics of the Crestron Cameo International Keypad (C2NI-CB). Back to the blog:

“With our balanced proportions, a keypad can be an accent in a room, provide contrast, or blend in. By selecting the style of buttons and being able to pick from a wide variety of finishes, the look can really be customized.” And with a wide range of button options, the finished keyplates are a brilliant addition to a Crestron Home® OS solution.

“Our work with Mastermoulders and Rhombus Europe follows the same principle — taking the extremely reliable Crestron ‘internals’ and outfitting it with a faceplate that can change the look entirely,” says Kerkhof.

“When it comes to a bespoke faceplate, Mastermoulders in the UK are really good at those solutions,” he adds. “If there’s a request for a truly custom metal design, I know they can deliver for our yacht designers.”

Keypads with Native Crestron Integration

The third option features a range of manufacturers worldwide, all of whom offer keypads and dimmers for native Crestron integration. “The workings behind the keypad are their own, but there’s a Crestron chip in there that makes them a perfect fit,” says Kerkhof.

“Again, metal finishes are often the most popular when it comes to this set of solutions,” he adds. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on the keypads created by Meljac, and we’re really excited by the look and feel of the Atelier Luxus Collections.” Both the Atelier Edges and Heritage collections allow designers to combine premium materials and custom finishes with the Crestron Home OS experience. A newer addition to native Crestron integration is the line of Faradite keypads and sensors, machined from solid brass and hand finished in the UK, with a strong focus on material quality, refined detailing, and long-term durability.

There are glass keypad options, too. Arkadia and Black Nova both bring high-end Italian designs into the mix, each in their own elegant way. Domex keypads are available with customizable glass faceplates in a range of finishes and colors, with support for both horizontal and vertical mounting. Tyba brings its own unique wrinkle to Crestron integrations with Turn, its award-winning rotary keypad. Vitrea® VTouch® keypads offer elegant glass colors, configurable button layouts, LED visibility, and versatile installation options.

“It’s really important that everyone’s at the table at the outset of a new yacht build or a refit,” says Kerkhof. “That way, we can ensure that everyone’s satisfied — and when a designer sees that we have so many keypad choices available to them, that’s when it all starts to really come together. Knowing that the ‘backbone’ of the Crestron system can be easily installed and provide the same user experience that an owner’s accustomed to in their homes back on land is a big deal.”

“In yachting, scenes that provide circadian rhythm, human-centric lighting, and RGBW fixture presets are becoming more and more popular,” says Kerkhof. “And Crestron can deliver all of that while finding that perfect keypad aesthetic, no matter what the designer specifies.”
